There are a great number of different possibilities when choosing outdoor carpets, both for the form and for the function. But installing outdoor carpets yourself is still the same procedure, regardless of the shape and material of the carpeting that you selected. This guide will steer you through the installation process.
To start with, make sure that you get the right DIY tools. Your outdoor carpet supplier can tell you about the exact requirements, but these will certainly include double-sides adhesive tape, glue, measuring tape and a good knife. Make sure to acquaintance yourself with the glue’s installation instructions before laying down the outdoor carpet.
Don’t forget that you need the right type of outdoor carpet for the job. Don’t save on waterproofing if the area you are installing the carpeting in is not covered, and get UV-resistant materials if sunlight and color fading could be an issue. The glue should be specific and high-quality or all your effort will be naught in a short time.
If applicable, start by dividing up any complex areas into rectangular chunks. You will be laying out the carpet one rectangle at a time. Clean out the area of installation with care, and then lay down a grid of double adhesive tape, without taking off the masking strips.
Once that is done, place down the outdoor carpet in the first area and measure it well against the edges of the area that is to be carpeted. Leave a couple of extra centimeters against walls, and cut away the remaining protruding carpet. Cut the carpet perpendicularly to its main surface, not at an angle.
Now lay down the outdoor carpet and ply one half of it on top of the other. Prepare the glue strips and add the liquid adhesive. Make sure to follow the glue’s instructions carefully, as setting times, and thicknesses vary between manufacturers.
Time to fix the outdoor carpet to the floor. Take extra care to lay down the carpet smoothly, so that you do not create any wrinkles and furrows on the material. Make sure that the fitting with regards to walls and other fixes obstacles is correct.
Now do the same thing on the other side, removing tape covers, applying glue and rolling down the other outdoor carpet smoothly and steadily. One you are done with the whole area, if you have a carpet roller this is the time to use it to smooth out the outdoor carpet even further.
Now you can trim the edges of the piece of outdoor carpet to the correct size, using a pair of scissors or a sharp knife. Be careful when cutting, and never cut towards yourself with a knife. Finish off my removing any excess glue with solvent.
Repeat the process on the next area to be carpeted, until all the outdoor carpet has been installed. Where two pieces of carpet meet, the area can either be sown together or covered with a special metal casing. You will soon have a perfectly installed outdoor carpet!
