Purchasing Combi Boilers

in Home & Family - Landscaping
by Tal Potishman

According to recent reports, many people are choosing to invest in high efficiency combi boilers. In fact, they are so popular that they are accounting for over 70% of the entire marketplace. There are many reasons why people are seeing the benefits of installing combi boilers. Not only are they easy to install, they are easy to use and to run. In the current economic climate, people are being more cautious than ever before when making a purchase.

As a result of the recession, consumers are more cautious than ever before when deciding where to spend their money. However, even most consumers are aware that heating and having hot water are fundamental human needs. They are an essential requirement of our day to day lives, therefore we are willing to put a little expenditure on these requirements.

Many of the reports indicate that gas central heating and hot water is the UK consumer’s main choice and the combi boiler is the most common choice of boiler. With advancements in technology happening every day, it is possible that this might change over the next decade or so, however in this present time, combi boilers remain a popular choice.

The benefits of purchasing combi boilers

There are many reasons why combi boilers are so efficient and easy to use. They are useful in providing all the heating and hot water you need. However, they are useful for other purposes too. For example, if you have shortage of room, you do not need to worry with a combi boiler, as it is small and compact enough to fit inside a kitchen unit or even under the stairs. In addition, you do not waste unnecessary hot water as it is only created when it is actually required. As it does not store hot water, there is no need for a tank or any other additional plumbing.

Disadvantages of using high efficiency combi boilers

Sometimes combi boilers are not the easiest to repair if something goes wrong. In some instances, the damage can be so bad that it is impossible to fix, in which case the whole system needs to be replaced. However, it is important to bear in mind that this can be rare, and if the problem is relatively minor, a professional installer will be able to repair it.

Another bit of adjusting that some consumers have to do is getting used to the delivery time of useable hot water. You may be used to receiving hot water within seconds of turning the hot water tap, however will not be too pleased if you find yourself waiting a bit longer. The reason for the delay is because with a combi boiler, the water flow rate is not as good as a traditional storage cylinder. It is possible for some people to get used to this, however many manufacturers are now pushing for improvements to be made.

Is a combi boiler right choice for you?

Combi boilers are known for having many advantages and disadvantages. It all depends on individual suitability and what will work best for you. As a boiler is a great investment, it is best to get some advice from a professional installer before you reach your final decision. They will help you assess the various options available to you.

Why You Should Service Your Boiler

in Home & Family - Landscaping
by Tal Poyishman

Most people do not realise how important it is for them to service their boiler regularly. If your boiler is serviced properly than your boiler will provide your household with hot water and heating for many years to come. You should look out for any noticeable signs that something could be wrong with your boiler. This will be important so that you can fix the problem early on.

When is the best time to have it serviced?

The most practical time to have your boiler serviced is during summer time. It is a convenient time as most boiler engineers will not be as busy and you can have it checked for any faults. Once you have had it examined you will have peace of mind that your boiler will be running efficiently during the winter.

What will the boiler engineer check when examining your boiler?

Most boiler engineers will analyse the boiler flue output and the pipe work will be examined together with a ventilation and clearance check. Furthermore you would expect that all the key components should be taken out, cleaned, checked and reassembled, and any defective parts should be replaced.

What is the danger of not having your boiler serviced?

The choice is entirely yours on whether you decide to have your boiler serviced. If you choose not to have it serviced, there is a danger that the by-products of the burnt gas will build up inside of the boiler and gradually reduce its efficiency. By having your boiler regularly maintained, your plumber will be able to identify any potential issues very early on in the process, and help you avoid a possible boiler breakdown in the future. You may be reluctant to pay for these parts now, however, this will probably serve you better rather than worrying about coming home one day to no hot water or heating.

Most boiler engineers recommend that you service your boiler at the same time each year, and as time progresses and your boiler starts to get old, the service can be carried out as part of the boiler service contract, or as a one-off service.

Servicing for safety

Maintaining your boiler is not only essential to keep your hot water and heating running smoothly. Your safety issue is also a big factor. Many modern gas appliances using natural gas are quite safe in the home, however this is subject to the fact that you have a annual boiler servicing plan.

The real danger is the one of carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide can be best described as an odourless and tasteless gas, which is lethal. If there is insufficient ventilation to a gas burner, then this will lead to a yellow flame being produced and carbon monoxide possibly leaking into the room. Adults and children who are exposed to this can be impacted for a long period of time, in some cases eve leading to their death.

In conclusion it is highly recommended that you service your boiler regularly. By servicing it you will have peace of mind that your boiler will be in good working condition during the coldest months when you need it the most.

Introduction to Franchising

in Home & Family - Landscaping
by Tal Potishman

For many people franchising offers an attractive alternative to starting up a business from scratch. This is due to the fact that working with an established franchisor means that you will be working with an already recognised brand name and you will be able to benefit from a tried and tested market. In some ways you will be completely running your own business as each franchisee outlet is owned and operated by the franchisee. However, ultimately the franchisor will retain control over how the products and services are marketed and sold. Depending on your own personal interests, the world of franchising offers a wide variety of business opportunities for you to become a part of.

Franchising explained

Franchising is when the owner of the business (the Franchisor) grants a licence to another person or business (the Franchisee) to use their business idea. In the agreement the licence will be for a fixed duration of time, and will give the franchisee permission to use the franchisor’s name, product, service and association. Therefore you will be making a connection with a recognised brand name, and working to make a return on your investment, using the franchisor’s products and services. The franchisor will already have a successful system in place, and you will be working by the rules of this system.

The advantages associated with Franchising

There are many advantages of buying a franchise. Some of these include:

There is less risk involved in working on an already proven idea. If you observe the other franchises doing well, chances are that you will succeed too

The more recognised the brand name is, the more you will benefit from it. Customers prefer to deal with the ‘known’ rather than the ‘unknown’

You will be able to take advantage of the many perks associated with dealing with a franchiser. The franchiser will provide you with constant advice and training to promote the business. Your level of knowledge will increase substantially from dealing with a network of successful individuals

The banks will be more helpful towards assisting you financially as they will be aware that you will be operating a franchise with a good reputation

As you can see, there are many reasons for operating a franchise. However, franchising is not for everyone, and it is up to the individual whether they will be able to deal with some of it’s drawbacks:

There is a certain lack of independence associated with franchising. This essentially means that you are not in control of the show, and you may have to adhere to certain restrictions on running the business

The more well-known the franchise is, the more expensive it is likely to be. You will have to be prepared to dig deep into your pockets for this

You have to be prepared for the fact that there is a risk of the franchise going out of business. The world of business generally is never certain, and this should be kept in mind

The level of support and training you will receive will vary from business to business. Not every type of franchise will offer the same amount. It will be up to you to investigate this further before you decide to operate the franchise

Competitive Energy Market Needs More Changes

in Home & Family - Landscaping
by Tal Potishman

Ofgem, the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets, examined the operations of the gas and electricity markets for eight months beginning in February 2008 for the purpose of determining the effectiveness of the energy suppliers ten-year-old competitive market and the level of service energy customers are receiving. Energy suppliers are under more scrutiny than usual because of todays extraordinarily high fuel prices.

For the most part, the transition to a competitive market has seen positive changes in the areas of lower energy costs, a larger selection of fuel programmes, and improved service to customers. Even though the measures taken thus far by the gas and electricity markets have appeared to gain favourable results, there are some areas of improvement that need to be accelerated in order to ensure the effectiveness of the competitive market and protect customers.

Great Britains gas and electricity markets currently have six prominent energy companies that serve domestic customers. While no evidence of a cartel has been detected, the presence of these businesses inhibits the emergence of new energy companies. Over the past ten years, new businesses have entered into the energy market competition, but the majority of them have exited the market, and those remaining serve only 0.3 percent of the customer base. Difficulties encountered by emerging energy businesses limit the choices available to gas and electricity customers.

The ability to switch between gas and electricity services is one of the benefits domestic and small businesses have with the competitive energy market. Information about changing energy services is obviously available to customers, because 96% of current gas and electricity customers have heard of the option, and of the customers that have decided to switch, more than three-fourths of them reported a satisfactory experience. Even though 96% of customers are aware of their option to switch energy suppliers, only 17% of these customers have actually acted on this option.

The majority of customers are wary of making a decision to switch or do not believe they have the knowledge to choose the best deal. Some customers do not have Internet access and are unable to successfully compare the available deals and make well-informed decisions. Detailed customer awareness programmes and a simplified switching process are necessary to improve this area of concern.

Gas and electricity suppliers use competitive prices to interest potential customers in their services. There are many energy plan deals available to domestic and small business customers, including dual fuel packages, stable or capped price tariffs, packages for green energy, and energy service deals. One of the problems with the dual fuel packages is that they are not available to customers who are not on the gas grid, and these customers typically pay more for their energy than other customers do. Another area of concern is that customers that choose a low price introductory plan do not understand that the low price is in effective for a limited time.

Energy Advancements Must be Sustainable

in Home & Family - Landscaping
by Tal Potishman

During the past several years, great strides have been made in improving the UKs energy efficiency ratings. This is only the beginning of a long-term commitment for achieving a low carbon economy. The nations gas and energy sectors are obligated to advance their efforts in the area of reducing greenhouse gas emissions while, at the same time, limiting the burdens placed on consumers.

Gas and electricity projects related to energy conservation and lower greenhouse gas emissions must meet Government requirements year after year. Power stations combined with industries and residences contribute 66% of the UKs carbon dioxide emissions. Programs piloted by the gas and electricity sectors in 2006 and 2007 resulted in an emissions decrease of 4%. These programs concentrated on coal to gas conversion and renewable energy projects.

Total energy consumption has declined steadily since 2005, with reports in 2007 indicating a 3% decrease. Electricity markets disclosed a 3% reduction in consumer usage, and gas markets reported a 4% reduction. The Governments target for the energy sectors is to continue in the direction of greater energy efficiency, with evidence of improvement every year.

While achieving significant accomplishments in the search for a low carbon economy is the vision, limiting the financial consequences to customers must be considered as well. Considering the current bleak economic picture, this is a quite an undertaking. Three and one half million UK households were at fuel poverty level in 2006, and more than three-fourths of these were vulnerable households. To be classified as a fuel poverty household, fuel costs for heating a home must exceed 10% of household income. An estimated .7 million households in 2007 and .5 million households in 2008 were added to the growing list of fuel poverty households.

Ofgem (the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets) organizes efforts between the Government and energy sectors for sustainable development programs. Energy efficiency goals as well as consumer protection are managed by the agency. Fuel poverty is a great concern for Ofgem, and they have set 2018 as the year that this overwhelming social issue is eliminated. Ofgem is a dependable resource for the development, initiation, execution of green energy programs.

The gas and electricity sectors have achieved positive results from their efforts in the past several years to save energy, protect the nations supply of fuel, reduce carbon dioxide emissions, and lower energy costs. Ofgem has played a large role in the energy sectors reaching and exceeding low carbon goals. Concentrated effort and further innovations are needed, however, in order to meet the Governments targets for continual improvement.

The Dangers Of Carbon Monoxide

in Home & Family - Landscaping
by Tal Potishman

Carbon monoxide is a lethal gas that should be taken seriously. It is so lethal in fact, that once it is inhaled it can kill you within minutes. You can suffer carbon monoxide poisoning anywhere, whether it be at home or at work. It’s particular lethal weapon is that it is odourless and invisible. It only takes a faulty appliance to cause destruction to its inhabitants. Once carbon monoxide has been breathed in, it replaces the oxygen in the blood, killing off cells and starving vital organs of oxygen.

Many reports have indicated that some 20 million households in the UK are not protecting themselves by taking necessary precautions to detect the gas. Some of the early symptoms to look out for are feelings of nausea, dizziness, headaches, and forgetfulness. The general nature of these symptoms suggest that they can be easily missed or misinterpreted. This is even more so when the person affected moves out of their environment and their symptoms clear.

What can be done?

You can be at risk from carbon monoxide both at home and at work, and it is easy to get affected by these dangers through lack of vigilance and care. There are many things that can be done to reduce the risk of exposure. Once people start to recognise ways in which to prevent carbon monoxide exposure, they will be in a better position to deal with any danger that presents itself.

If you are about to go on vacation. it is a good idea to call up and check if there are any gas appliances where you are staying. It is better to be safe rather than regret it later. Remember, if you find out that there is a gas heater at your location, you always have the option to be asked to move somewhere else. If you wish to be extra precautious, it is good to take a carbon monoxide detector.

How to deal with an emergency

One of the most important things is to know what to do and who to call in an emergency case of carbon monoxide poisoning. If the appliance you were using starts leaking gas, stop using it immediately and get everyone away from the area as soon as possible. Never use the appliance again until you have had it checked over by a professional registered engineer.

In addition, you must ensure that you get enough ventilation into the area. Open your windows and doors and vacate the area. If you have someone that has been seriously affected by carbon monoxide poisoning, it is essential that you remove this person from the contaminated area immediately. The person affected should be moved out into the open air, and be give pure oxygen if it is available. It is essential that medical help is called for, and the person should get rest.

Once the health professional reaches the person affected, make sure you notify the health professional about your suspicions of carbon monoxide poisoning. This is important so that the correct treatment is provided. It is important that you do not smoke in the property if you have gas appliances installed. Also make sure you do not turn and light switches on and off.

Is Self Building An Alternative to the Construction Industry?

in Home & Family - Landscaping
by Tal Potishman

About twenty thousand United Kingdom residents build their own homes each year. They decide that instead of paying a real estate agent to find them a pre-built home or hiring a contractor to do the building for them that it is easier and more cost efficient to simply build their dream home themselves. With so many people undertaking the building of their own homes, what does this mean for the Construction Industry? Is building your home really a cost effective alternative to paying someone else to build it for you or buying a home that has already been constructed?

The biggest obstacle for a person who has decided to construct her own home depends on just how much experience she has with all of the different tasks that are involved in home construction (like electrics as well as carpentry). If the self builder is inexperienced then she will run into many problems as she struggles to build a home that is safe and sound as well as functional. Obviously if the self builder does have the necessary experience she needs to build a safe and functional house and is well versed in local building and electrical codes, then doing the work by herself could end up saving her a large sum of money!

How does a person choose the best location on which to build his or her new home? If you are new to self building, it is probably best to spend some extra money and hire someone to help you figure out which location is best for self building. This can depend on what kind of lot you want, and it can also depend on local zoning codes. A professional builder will be able to help you find the land you desire without eating up too much of your building budget.

Coming up with the funding for a self build project can be a challenge. Banks are more likely to lend a person money if the lender understands what the money is going toward.

A regular mortgage is easy to get because the lender understands the concept of buying a house that is already built. With a self build project, the final number is not always known ahead of time, especially if the builder is inexperienced and does not know how to budget for unexpected expenses.

Self building can save experienced construction and electrics expert quite a bit of money. For those who aren’t sure whether or not the project is up their alley, further research should be done before making a decision.

Capita Takes Over for Corgi

in Home & Family - Landscaping
by Tal Potishman

Residents of the United Kingdom have grown to recognize the Corgi certificate as a sort of “certificate of approval” for gas plumbers and now that certification is going to change hands. A few months from now the gas certifications will be issued to gas plumbers and monitored by a company called Capita and Corgi will no longer be involved in the process.

Corgi has been in charge of gas plumbers’ certifications for almost twenty years and has spent that time making sure that homes using natural gas have been up to code. As of April of 2009 the Corgi Company will step down as the official protocol company for gas safety and the Health and Safety Executive office’s torch will officially be passed to Capita.

For the most part, the day to day operations of the gas plumbing industry will remain much as they were before the switch in regimes. Both companies stress that operations for Corgi employees will continue to operate on a “business as usual” basis until the end of business on March 31st. As of April 1, 2009, Capita will be in charge. As of yet there is no word as to how the transition will take place or what the affects will be for natural gas consumers. Both companies are working very hard to ensure that there are no major hiccups in operations.

If you have natural gas, you do not have to worry about whether or not you will be protected once Corgi officially steps down and Capita steps up. It has been made apparent by the Health and Safety Executive office that Capita’s takeover is largely because the company proved that it was more than ready to ensure that consumers of natural gas would be well educated about the concerns involved with their consumption of natural gas.

Corgi’s contract went up for bid after a 2006 survey of homeowners in the United Kingdom proved that more than fifty percent of the homes serviced by Corgi professionals were unaware of the dangers posed by carbon monoxide. Natural gas customers will find a number of benefits involved with Capita taking over for Corgi, especially in terms of natural gas education.

Corgi will continue to be in charge of plumber registrations. Certifications and gas regulations will not change until the end of business on March 31st, 2009. As of the start of business on April 1st, 2009, Capita will take over for inspections and employment of the nation’s natural gas plumbers.

250 Corgi employees are expected to be hired by Capita to ensure a smooth transition. Instead of running the risk of confusing people, both companies agreed that a definitive date of transition was in order. April 1st is the big day and after that Capita will rule the roost but consumers can expect minimal disruptions.

Renewable Energy – Will Wind Farm Reality Follow the Hype?

in Home & Family - Landscaping
by Tal Potishman

The government in the UK promised to reduce the country’s carbon emissions by eighty percent by 2020 compared to 1990 levels. In recent weeks, however, the UK public opinion started to question the dedication of the government.

A recent article published by wallstreetpit.com claims that BP, a large British energy company, has announced that it will be refocusing its wind power projects in the United States while shutting down the wind power projects in Turkey, India, China and here in the UK. The article also claims that the UK will use wind power for thirty percent of the country’s electricity supply. One has to wonder why BP is pulling out of the UK if the government is truly dedicated to exploring the options offered by wind power and other green technologies.

According to an article by the Guardian, Great Britain is one of the best locations in the world to be home to wind technology development. The popularity of Great Britain is owed mostly to the long coastline and good wind conditions that the country is famous for.

The article goes on to say that a Vattenfall and Iberdola Renovables new partnership will lead to a new United Kingdom-based windfarm. The building of this windfarm is estimated at 780m pounds and energy output is expected to be 300MW. Is this windfarm allowed because BP has refocused its attention? Why is private enterprise taking over an industry that the government claims to be invested in using?

Even more complaints are being voiced about the sum of money that will be needed to build the wind farms that will generate all of the green energy the UK’s government is so enamoured with. If thirty percent of the nation’s energy is going to be produced by wind farms, quite a few will need to be built to shoulder that burden. The Carbon Trust, an independent research group, has guessed that, in order to keep the government’s promise the process will need to get considerably faster and-at the same time-sixteen billion pounds will need to be removed from the project’s original budget. Redgreenandblue.com points out that although the UK targeted 2020 as the date by which this wind energy would be available, only twenty five percent of the wind farms will have been built by then.

UK residents understand that the future of energy production lies with renewable energy and not the existing power grid. Renewable energy is more cost effective and is better for the environment than the current system. Still, with so many roadblocks in the way, each one of us should be wondering just how serious the UK government’s commitment to renewable energy is. If it is truly committed why is the project slowing down and losing money? What is getting in the way of the 2020 goal?

Marketing Hints for Independent Heating and Plumbing Businesses

in Home & Family - Landscaping
by Tal Potishman

The success of small and independent businesses depends completely on a steady stream of customers and clients paying for that business’s services. This is especially important for the independent business owner whose budget and resources are limited, whose staff is small and the owners who do not have a corporate brand or marketing budget to rely upon for customer recognition. To compete in today’s saturated heating and plumbing market, small business owners need their marketing efforts to reach as many eyes as possible. This can be difficult to accomplish on a small budget.

The following tips are just a few ways that the owners of small heating and plumbing companies put their best marketing foot forward:

1. Realize that marketing is a marathon and not a sprint. Marketing is not meant to be a quick fix. Real sales marketing takes commitment and patience. Business owners need to make sure that their company’s marketing message is obvious in everything that is related to your business (employee uniforms, stationery, logo painted on the company car, business cards, etc). The more visible a company’s marketing, the more customers it will attract.

2. The customer’s happiness comes first. Always, Go above and beyond to make sure that your customer is happy and that customer will be more likely to recommend your services to his or her friends and family. The best way to ensure your customer’s happiness is to give them more than he/she expects-extra services for free, discounts, etc.

3. Avoid raising prices and stick to the price you have quoted to your customers at all costs. Unexpected charges will send a customer running to your competitor. Any extra charges need to be discussed with the customer as soon as the business owner recognizes a need for but before action is taken on them. Let the customer decide if their budget fits the project.

4. Pay attention to the company’s business referral sources: advertisements, phone book listing, client referral, walk-ins, etc. Doing so can help small business owners avoid paying too much money for a marketing effort that is not working.

5. Build a website for the business. Most plumbing and heating professionals are not aware of how beneficial a website can be to an independent business owner. The site does not need to be fancy. A simple (but good looking) list of services, prices and contact information should be all that is needed to put a small heating and plumbing business on the world wide web.

These five simple tips should be a good starting point to get most independent business owners to make the most out of a small budget. Given the difficult economic climate, with customers having to cut back on expenditures, it is important to be able to stand out from the crowd and win more business.
