Keeping Your Home Free From Drafts and Unwanted Heat

When people are working on remodeling their homes, many times they tend to overlook the insulation in the home. By insulating your home you are making it more energy efficient and easier to maintain a comfortable temperature. There are a few ways that a homeowner can keep their homes at a comfortable temperature, while being more energy efficient at the same time.

First, you will want to make sure that there are no gaps that will allow for the warm or cold air to creep inside. If you have gaps that require filling, it is a very simple project to take on. When looking for gaps you will want to start by looking at your windows and doors. For gaps that are found around your doors you can use an adhesive backed insulation tape around the inside of the door jam. For cracks around the molding of your windows you can utilize a silicone based caulk. This is a simple process and can be completed with a few tubes of caulk and a caulk gun.

Next look under sinks and behind toilets to make sure there are no gaps between the incoming pipes and the wall. These holes are not only draining of your energy, but they are also a great way for rodents and bugs to get in.

Another good way to fill in larger gaps is by using a foam aerosol. It is compressed foam that you squeeze through a nozzle tube into the gap and it expands to fill in the void. It works great for filling in larger gaps, anything over a quarter of an inch, but it can be tricky and if you get it on anything that you don’t want it to get on, you will never get it off. They do make a special cleaner, but nobody ever remembers to buy any of it.

You will also not want to forget to check your attic and crawl spaces. You want to make sure that they are insulated with a pink insulation and that it is at an adequate level. If you want to increase the level of insulation you have a few options. The first is to buy a roll of insulation at your local hardware store, and the second is to hire a professional that offers a spray insulation that is more effective as it can get into the smaller spaces that you are unable to reach.

Giving Your Home A Fresh New Look

in Lighting
by Jean Parker

You need to make sure that when you are updating your kitchen you are making it look great and at the same time, it needs to serve its purpose. Clutter needs to be taken care of and the furniture needs to be placed so you can flow through the room while cooking and don’t have to worry about tripping over things (which can get dangerous). Making sure the kitchen is the heart of your home is important and there are several ways to make sure that this happens.

Wall color is often what most people see first when they walk into a room. The right color can enhance the dimensions of a room, while the wrong color can make the room feel almost claustrophobic. Since the kitchen is a room where a lot of activity takes place, such as cooking and washing up dishes, a brighter color will energize the space and make the room feel light and airy, which is a great quality in a room that is so heavily used. Darker colors like navy blue and hunter green act as appetite suppressants, and while that is great for the waistline, it does not do much for a family meal or dinner party. Colors in the red and yellow families encourage appetites, which may be why “Kitchen Yellow” is such a popular color for this room. More neutral colors such as pale greens and beiges are great to create an airy space that can be dressed up with colorful accessories.

Making sure that the accessories are stylish is a big thing when it comes to updating. To have them out should not be hideous. You want them to be ready to use and also look good. Your small appliances should match (like toaster, microwave and so on) because they are usually out in the open and you want the room to look sleek and put together. Keeping them the same color or family is a good idea.

Making your kitchen look put together and also welcoming can be hard but linens can help you to do the trick. Making them the same color may sound like the answer but it isn’t. You need to find two or three colors that go together and decorate that way.

The smallest touches can make your kitchen feel more welcome and add a little bit more warmth. Candles and even pictures in your home and kitchen can make it less cold and people will want to hang out in there with you while you are cooking and baking and having a great time.

The First Thing Everyone Will Notice Is Your Front Entrance

in Lighting
by Jean Parker

If you are looking to make you home more inviting and increase its curb appeal the first place that you should start with is the front entry and entry path. The front of your home is the only thing that those passing by see, and the first impression for the visitors that come into your home.

A coat of paint and a few other ideas can make a nice change in a drab entryway. One thing that I don’t agree with is that a front door needs to be some crazy color to stand out. Painting the front door bright red or orange or some crazy green is not necessary. A nice complimentary color to the main color of your house should do just fine. Browns and tans may be a bit boring, but they look just fine on the front door if there are some nice complimentary items to offset it. Just because you don’t need the front door to be a bright, obscene color doesn’t mean that you can’t add some color to the front door.

Some potted plants or flowers by your front door can make a wonderful difference if you are looking to add color to your entryway. There are many wonderful plants that you can place by your front entrance, whether you choose a hanging basket or a plated plant. Plants are also great since they are usually changed out when the seasons turn, therefore every few months your entryway will have a new look. Once you have decorated with plants you can then move onto the door hardware. A new, high quality door knob set will not only provide you with better protection, it can also add a classy look to your entryway.

When you go shopping for your door hardware you want to make sure that you do not skimp on the price. This hardware is going to protect your from intruders and you want to make sure it is the best you can afford. A good rule of thumb to follow is the old saying, “You get what you pay for.” Along with the door hardware you should also consider upgrading your entryway lighting.

Most homes have an outside light beside the door. Houses usually have at least one fixture, most homes have one on either side of the door. There are so many different styles and looks to choose from, it could be difficult to make a decision. Another nice thing about these lights is that they are pretty simple to change, the wiring is already done and a few simple steps are needed. Just be sure to disconnect the power before doing any electrical work.

Steps On Putting Up Trim

in Lighting
by Jean Parker

The secret to good casing and trim work is precision and patience. Also, using the right tools and quality products makes a big difference. When using wood to trim out a door or a window, there are different styles to choose from. There are so many kinds of wood and so many different styles of casework that it can almost be overwhelming trying to decide what to use.

One tool that is very handy when you are cutting wood trim is a miter box. For small jobs that only require a few cuts you can use a miter box with a manual miter saw. If you are working on a large project it is more convenient for you to use an electric compound miter saw. Before you begin making any cuts you want to make sure that you measure it twice, so that you have an accurate measurement, before you begin to cut. If you are unclear on the exact measurement you should always go a little bigger than you think, this way it can be cut again to get the right size. Remember you can always re-cut a piece of wood that is to large, but not one that is too small.

After choosing what type of trim you want, you just need to measure the length of pieces you need. Any home improvement store sells it by the linear foot and can get you the lengths you need. For trimming around doors and windows, the casing looks the same and just has to be cut into three or four sides at 45 degree angles.

After being cut, the corners should be fitted together with a staple or nail so that they do not come apart once installed. This will keep the cracks of the joints at a minimum and make caulking the joints less visible. All of the visible joints should be caulked with a latex paintable caulk. This will hide the gap that any imperfections in the wall and wood show.

After everything is nailed up, which should be done with a nail gun because it is a cleaner and easier process than hand nailing, and after the joints are caulked, you can paint the trim. Trim comes either primed or bare wood. I like the primed wood because it is easier to paint when everything is done. If you get the bare wood, you have to prime it first. Also the bare wood is usually of a higher grade and is usually better quality. That way, if you don’t want to paint it can be stained. Stain grade wood is the best quality and the most expensive. You don’t need it unless you are going to stain the wood to match an existing wood piece.

Making Your House Look Brand New

in Lighting
by Jean Parker

One of the simplest pleasure, when you have finished redecorating a room, is standing back and admiring the job that you have completed. It may have taken a little more muscles than you used in a while, and it may have cost a little more money than you have budgeted for, but when it is all over you are left with a room that you love. Since loving the room that you just created is a vital part to redecorating, this is a feeling like no other once it is achieved.

There are some things that you can do in any room to make a quick dramatic change. At the top of the list is probably the single easiest and biggest changer-paint. Paint does more with less to change the appearance of a room that it is almost a miracle worker.

First thing that you should know about painting is that you should always use a primer. When dealing with primer you will want to make sure that it is high quality as this will ensure the smoothness and look that you are trying to achieve. If you purchase a primer that is of cheap quality you may find that you are actually spending more, since you will need more coats to get the look that you desire.

If it is important not to skimp on the primer, it is doubly important not to skimp on the paint. Buying cheap off brand paint might seem like a money saver, but I can almost guarantee that you will be dissatisfied and will have to repaint and spend more money. The little extra money spent on the quality paint upfront will save you so much grief and misery later. Nothing is worse than spending money on a project that you already spent money on. If you want to spend money like that and you want to throw it away, just stuff it in an envelope and send it to me. I’ll spend it on some cool stuff and you won’t have to worry about it.

When painting your room it is also important to purchase a high quality brush or roller. This will allow you to achieve a smooth and flawless painting job that may otherwise not be achieved with cheap quality brushes.

Bringing A Room Together

in Lighting
by Jean Parker

Once you are finished redecorating a room in your home, you will often find that you need the one item that can bring all your colors and theme together. This finishing touch should act as the focal point of the room and can something as simple as a painting with all the right colors or an area rug that blends in with the theme.

Getting the right look to a room can start with the dcor or it can start with the paint or the architectural details. A perfect built in bookshelf or mantle around the fire place can be the thing to build around. The accessories can accent the way the room is built, not just what you put in it. The wood work and brick and tile work in a room is the perfect thing to get started with for picking out a theme or focus.

Beautiful wood work is a time consuming and expensive and should be something that you showcase and use to the advantage of a room. Don’t cover up the architectural details of your house; use them to your advantage to make the home stand out. Even though it seems like an easy thing to do, and in some instances it is, trim work like crown molding and chair railing can turn a room into something beautiful and functional and exciting. The strategic use of trim, not over using it, can make a room look stylish and adds a decorative and architectural detail that can make a big difference in the appearance and feel of a room.

The way the colors and textures and patterns of the room fit together is not an easy thing to accomplish. Picking out the right colors can be time consuming and difficult, but matching everything together can be done with a little effort and some help from the experts. Checking for ideas in magazines and online is a good place to start, and asking questions and looking at other people ideas can help put new ideas and thought in your mind.

Don’t be afraid to experiment and put things together that are new and that you might not be sure about. The worse thing that can happen is that it doesn’t work and you have to try something else. No big deal, but you will never know what works and what doesn’t work without trying.
