Can a Pipe be Relit?

in Home & Family - Landscaping
by Dave Sabot

One of the nice things about pipes is that they provide a long-lasting smoke. In fact, sometimes this smoke lasts long enough that the smoker would prefer to put it out and to finish it at a later time. Pipes can oftentimes be left to go out on their own and, when they are, one must go through the lighting process again when they wish to finish it. The process is largely the same as the first light with a few steps removed.

Pipe smokers usually make use of a few different tools when packing their pipe. These will come into play when one relights their pipe. The most often-used three tools are a tamping tool, an aerator and a pipe cleaner. The aerator may have to be used to relight the pipe. The tamping tool may come into play, as well. One will find out whether the tobacco needs to be repacked as soon as they relight the pipe.

To light the pipe, repeat the initial lighting process. Simply hold the flame above the pipe and draw it into the tobacco by puffing. The idea is to get the tobacco hot enough to continuously combust without getting it so hot that the taste becomes overly-sharp. Once it is burning freely, the pipe can be smoked in the normal fashion. The tobacco may take on a slightly different flavor, even when it is burning correctly.

If the tobacco fails to light properly, one can aerate the bowl to make it burn more smoothly. Simply take the aerating tool and poke a few holes in the tobacco. Don’t poke too many or the tobacco will overheat. Generally, only a few holes need to be poked into the tobacco to set it to burning correctly. If the tobacco is very shaggy before being relit, one can simply tamp it down a few times to restore the correct packing job.

Relighting the pipe can make a bowl last a very long time. Because pipes do burn for so long, it’s natural to let them go out once and a while and to relight them later. Some smokers even keep the pipe in their mouth while it’s burnt out. If the tobacco proves to have an objectionable taste, it may be better to just repack a fresh bowl. Enjoyment, after all, is the entire point of smoking a pipe.

Lighting a Cigar the Right Way

in Home & Family - Landscaping
by Dave Sabot

While a cheap cigar deserves no more thought when being lit than does a cigarette, a fine cigar requires a bit of special attention. Lighting a cigar is a multi-stage process that involves first warming the tobacco and then lighting it in a way that provides an even ember at the foot. Of course, the first step in lighting any cigar is trimming off the cap so that one may draw through the stogie in the first place!

Lighting a cigar doesn’t actually start with the application of flame. First, one must correctly trim the cigar to ensure that they get the best possible draw. This is done using a specific type of tool. There are various styles of cutters available. The scissor-type cutters tend to leave a ragged edge at the end of the cigar. Punch-type cutters tend to have largely the same effect. Most cigar smokers vastly prefer the guillotine-style cutters which are oftentimes found attached to lighters.

After the cigar has been trimmed, one needs to warm the tobacco to ensure that it lights evenly. To accomplish this, simply hold the cigar in one hand and the lighter in the other. Roll the cigar over the top of the flame without actually letting the flame touch any part of the wrapper or the filler. This should be done until the foot of the cigar reaches an evenly warm temperature. Make certain to not overheat the cigar.

After the cigar has been warmed – called “toasting” by smokers – it is ready to be lit. Hold the cigar in one’s mouth at a slightly downward-pointing angle. Take the lighter and hold it underneath the cigar once again not allowing the flame to actually touch the wrapper or the filler. While rotating the cigar, puff on the cigar which will draw the flame into the filler and begin to create the ember. After the cigar is burning, check to make certain that the ember is burning evenly across the foot of the cigar.

Cigar cutter lighters are the most convenient implement for this process. The cutters allow the smoker to perform the entire process with only one tool. These implements, however, are very sharp. When they are stored in a pocket, one must be certain that the device is closed and locked. Most cigar smokers prefer butane lighters. Fluid-filled lighters tend to give the cigar a chemical taste. Butane burns cleanly enough where this is not at all an issue. One may also wish to try cedar strips for lighting their cigar.

Cigar Cutter Lighter Combinations

in Home & Family - Landscaping
by Dave Sabot

Aside from smoking, cigars also provide great occasions for debate. Among the most passionate debates are those which deal with the best way to cut a cigar before smoking it. Not only are there several different types of cutters on the market, there are multiple types of lighters with cigar cutter implements attached. There are numerous options available for such lighters which include all of the major types of cigar cutters. Choosing one or another may require defending one’s choice!

Some cigar lighters come with guillotine-style cutters attached. These are among the most popular cigar cutters on the market. They are well-known for providing a clean cut and, the double-bladed models are oftentimes use by those who prefer thick cigars. Most of the cutters attached to lighters will be of the single-blade variety. These cutters are a bit safer than the double-bladed models. This makes them more suitable for being carried about in one’s pocket.

The sole exception to this are the double-bladed guillotines. These cutters can be dangerous to carry in one’s pocket and, therefore, they are rarer on lighters though such devices do exist. The scissors-type cutters usually fold up into the lighter to protect the blades and the user alike. Like any high-quality cigar implement, these devices need to be cleaned and maintained properly to ensure good results.

Some guillotine cutters have double edges. These are provided on some lighters but it is much more common to see the single-edge models. This is simply a question of safety. Because the lighter is commonly carried in one’s pocket, there is always the chance that one may cut themselves when blindly digging for the device. Whichever type of cutter is chosen, one must make certain that they take care of it as they would any other quality smoking implement.

Lighters that include cigar cutters also represent a lighter with multiple types of maintenance. The cutters must be kept clean not only to ensure an easy smoke but for the sake of safety. The blades must also be kept short. Generally, a qualified lighter tech can provide sharpening and maintenance services for these devices. These devices are excellent choices for those who like to smoke when they’re outdoors or on the go.

How Windproof Lighters Work

in Home & Family - Landscaping
by Dave Sabot

There are several options available for wind resistant lighters. The most significant difference between each of the options is the fuel that the lighters employ. Today, many users have switched over to butane-filled lighters because of their cleaner performance and because they impart no chemical taste to any tobacco which they are used to light. Either option can provide excellent performance in adverse conditions including wind and rain. For those who love the outdoors, a windproof lighter is an excellent accessory.

A windproof torch uses butane as its fuel. These torches produce very hot, high-pressure jets of blue flame. Because sufficient force is used to power the flame, the fuel is not blown away by the wind. These devices are excellent for any outdoor application. The multi-jet models are particularly useful. The flames on these lighters can be directed, even upside down, which makes them ideal for difficult lighting situations. Deep candles, lanterns and, of course, pipes can be easily lit because of the directed flames.

Windproof butane lighters are generally of the torch variety. These lighters feature a high-pressure flame which can be directed to any angle, even upside down. This flame is also extremely resistant to being blown out or to being blown around by the wind. In fact, it is generally not necessary to shelter this flame with one’s hands when lighting the device in the wind. This makes them very popular with cigar and pipe smokers who require a controllable flame.

Butane lighters also have the advantage of using a much cleaner-burning fuel. Cigar and pipe smokers generally prefer these models because fluid tends to pollute the taste of tobacco. In cases where the lighter is simply being used for utilitarian purposes, such as lighting campfires, the butane lighters have another advantage. The flame can be directed at any angle which means that one need not engage in odd contortions to get a flame underneath kindling or into a grill.

Either choice will provide good results. Either choice will also generally constitute a very well-made lighter. Refillable lighters in general are of a much higher quality than disposables. They are designed to provide years of service and to be refilled many times over. These devices are sometimes seen passed down from generation to generation. Even the butane-filled models can provide such a long service life. Some of these lighters are actually collector’s items.

Stylish Dual-Flame Lighters

in Home & Family - Landscaping
by Dave Sabot

Among the most popular lighters on the market are the dual-flame models. These torches provide several advantages over their peers. They are very reliable and can light in adverse conditions. They are excellent choices for cigars and pipes because of their even heating area. The powerful high-pressure jets ensure windproof performance. The lighter’s use of butane fuel ensures that users need not worry about creating a mess every time they replace the fuel.

Lighters with more than one flame are preferred by some cigar smokers as they provide a wider heating area for the cigar. This helps to produce a more even light and can make the complex affair of lighting a cigar easier. These devices generally constitute the more expensive lighters on the market and many of them produce the distinctive blue flames that characterize very high-quality lighters. These lighters are, of course, more complex than their single-flame cousins.

Multi-jet torches allow a cigar or pipe smoker a valuable commodity: an even heating surface. Lighting either a cigar or a pipe requires that one heat the tobacco before actually igniting it. The multi-flame torches provide a wide surface area on which this can be done. They also produce a very controllable flame. Users will find this to be the case even in high-wind conditions.

Butane for high end lighters will usually be advertised as having a very low impurity content. This ensures that the lighter does not become fouled with impure ingredients and that the device produces hot reliable flame every time. Lighter fuel for two-jet lighters should generally be purchased from a tobacconist or from a website which specializes in quality lighters. The higher efficiency will result in a longer lifetime for the torch and in fewer trips back to have the lighter examined if it fails to light correctly. Most often, however, these lighters are remarkably reliable and can provide a lifetime of service.

The dual-flame butane torches on the market are generally among the most windproof of lighters. These lighters allow their users to fire up in the most adverse conditions. The powerful jets of flame also ensure that the user need not worry about the device becoming wet or otherwise compromised. Most of these lighters feature high-quality construction that ensures that they are durable enough for years of use. In many cases, they can be passed down over generations.

Cigar Lighter and Cutter Combos

in Home & Family - Landscaping
by Dave Sabot

Cigar smoking is a refined, luxurious way to pass the time. You’ll find that a cigar can help you relax, stimulate your mind and more. Of course, without the right cigar cutter and lighters, you’ll have a hard time gaining access to that enjoyment. Both cutting and lighting are required acts in the cigar smoking process. One of the best ways to ensure that you are able to do both with ease is to purchase a combination unit. These combine the benefits of a cigar lighter with those of a high quality cutter, ensuring that you have a long lasting solution to your needs.

Opting for the purchase of a combination lighter and cutter will necessitate knowing what type of lighter and cutting device that particular combo unit comes with. You’ll need to consider the cutter quite carefully, but you should pay equal attention to the lighter portion of the device. You’ll find quite a few different combinations on the market that can help to ensure you are able to smoke when and where you prefer, as well as offering you a quality cutting device.

The various cutters included with the combo unit should be considered carefully, as well. You’ll find that some lighters come with a guillotine style cutter. A hole in the center of the lighter allows you to insert the tip and then you simply depress the plunger to cut the tip of the cigar. You’ll also find punch style cutters and some brands even offer scissors installed within their lighters. Of course, scissor cigar cutters are oftentimes maligned, as they are somewhat difficult for a novice smoker to use correctly.

What is the right type of cigar lighter and cutter combination for you? You’ll need to know your own preferences to determine the answer to this question. What type of cutter do you prefer? Do you like the smooth action of a guillotine? Do you prefer a punch? Would you rather have another type altogether? These are important questions that must be answered before you can purchase a device that will work for your needs.

You’ll also need to consider the lighter portion of the device. Do you want a single torch head? Do you want a dual flame model? Would you prefer a triple headed lighter? You’ll find all of these options available and quite a few more, so choose carefully when opting for any lighter/cutter combo.

How Are Windproof Lighters Wind Resistant?

in Home & Family - Landscaping
by Dave Sabot

Windproof lighters are valuable tools that help to ensure smokers are able to enjoy their preferred pastime no matter where they might be. Every smoker has suffered the frustration that comes with trying to light up in windy conditions. Even just a light breeze can be enough to blow out that flame. To help avoid this problem, quite a few smokers have decided to give windproof models a chance. Do they work?

You’ll find that these lighters most certainly are windproof. Of course, if you use them in winds that are heavy enough, even the most advanced lighter will snuff out. However, if you’re attempting to smoke in hurricane force winds, you have more to worry about than not being able to light that cigarette or cigar. How do windproof lighters work? What actually makes them resistant to wind?

A lighter with windproof or wind resistant properties operates because of high pressure. The fuel within the lighter is released in a very high-pressure stream, which, when combined with oxygen and a spark, provides a high-pressure torch-type flame. This flame is stable in all types of winds and can help to ensure that any smoker is able to enjoy their preferred pastime. Standard butane lighters cannot provide these benefits, as they are low-pressure devices.

You’ll find that windproof lighters are available in a very wide array of configurations, and some of them even combine jet ports with traditional lighter ports. These dual flame lighters are ideal solutions for those who smoke a variety of different tobacco products and who need to ensure that they will be able to light their smoke in any outdoor conditions. Of course, you will also find models that have dual jet ports, triple jet ports and several other configurations that can help you ensure your smoking enjoyment anywhere at all.

Locating the right lighter model for your needs is not horribly difficult, but you will need to know what’s available. You will find that numerous manufacturers offer lighters with wind resistant properties. However, you should compare several things about each lighter before making a choice. Items for consideration include the duration of the warranty, the availability of repairs or replacement parts and what other consumers thought about using that particular lighter. You can find the right lighter with minimal effort.

Replacing The Flint Wheel On A Lighter

in Home & Family - Landscaping
by Dave Sabot

Investing in a high quality lighter is a great way to ensure that you have the ability to smoke when you would like. However, over time, it’s quite possible that your lighter will become damaged. While uncommon, you might find that you need to replace your flint wheel, either due to wear and tear or damage. This is where it pays dividends to purchase Zippo lighters, as they come with a lifetime warranty. If your flint wheel becomes damaged, you only need to send the lighter to the company and they will repair the lighter at no cost to you.

First, you need to locate the serial number of your lighter. This should be stamped on the bottom of the case. In some instances, it is actually on the inside bottom of the outer casing, or on the side of the lighter insert. Once you have the serial number, you need to locate the manufacturer’s website. On the website, you will need to use the lighter’s serial number to locate the corresponding parts. Most often, you will have to order the parts and wait for them to be shipped.

Sometimes, you can find a similar lighter and use it for spare parts. Look at the mounting method used to affix the flint wheel on both lighters. If they are the same and the wheels are of the same dimensions, you should have no problem fitting the wheel from the donor lighter to your own.

The process of removal and installation can vary quite a bit, though. You’ll find that some manufactures use steel bars, others use plastic bars while even more use metal rivets to hold the flint wheel in place. Before you start removing any parts, you need to make sure that you have the tools for the job on hand.

Rivets are the most commonly used method to mount the flint wheel. To remove the rivet from the donor lighter, you only need a pair of needle-nose pliers. However, to install the new rivet, along with the replacement flint wheel, you’ll need a pop rivet tool, as well as a replacement rivet. Do not attempt the installation if you do not have the correct tools, as this can result in damage to your lighter.

Is There a Difference in the Taste of Cigars from Other Countries?

in Home & Family - Landscaping
by Dave Sabot

Lighting a cigar and drawing in that rich and full flavor is one of the most satisfying feelings in the world for a cigar smoker. Everything about the pastime of cigar smoking is a treat, from the various cutters you use to the lighters that you choose to fire up your favorite cigar. Another great aspect of cigar smoking is the sheer amount of choices that you have when it comes to cigars. From aromatic blends to tobaccos from around the world, you can find something that will appeal to everyone. Something that many people often wonder when they first start smoking cigars is if there is a difference in the taste of cigars from other countries. The answer is a resounding yes.

Fortunately, it is entirely true. Cigars from other places in the world do have a different taste. This means that cigar smokers have even more options when it comes to finding good and unique cigars. A number of things can affect the way that a cigar tastes and geographic location is but one of them. Some wonder how it is possible that something like tobacco will have a different taste depending on where it is grown. The reason has much to do with the soil. The soil composition varies in different parts of the world. Some places have soil that is more acidic, while others have soil that is more alkaline. This can affect how smooth or harsh the cigar tastes.

The way in which the tobacco is cured after harvest has a lot to do with the taste as well. You will be able to find air cured and fire cured tobacco. The way in which a manufacturer cures the tobacco varies from region to region, and this can have an impact on the taste. Aging of the tobacco, as well as any added flavors that a manufacturer might add, are also factors that can determine the taste variances.

Yet another thing that can change the taste of the cigar is the size. The circumference of the cigar, also known as the ring gauge, is important. Even if you have two cigars from the same area of the world ” even from the same manufacturer ” if the ring gauge is different, the cigars will taste different. In most cases, the larger the gauge the richer the cigar flavor.

With all of the different cigar choices from around the world, smokers are going to be able to sample all of the different styles and tastes, adding even more to their enjoyment of the hobby.

Why is it that Some Cigars Are Difficult to Draw?

in Home & Family - Landscaping
by Dave Sabot

Hand rolled cigars are the favorite among many cigar smokers. You will be able to find a number of these cigars from various parts of the world, cigars that have incredible aromas and a great flavor. Even though these hand rolled cigars are so popular, some people are finding that they are difficult to draw on and hard to keep lit, even when lighting with good cigar lighters. It can sometimes feel as though you are puffing on a cigar that has something inside of it blocking the smoke. That is exactly what is happening in these cases.

The cigars that are hand rolled are sometimes rolled too tightly. This doesn’t happen often, but there is a good chance that at some point you are going to find a cigar that is difficult to draw. Don’t worry and don’t discard the cigar. You can fix the problem, and it won’t take very much effort or much time.

The reason that the cigars can be difficult to draw is actually due to the same reason they are so popular among cigar smokers ” they are hand rolled. Sometimes, the cigars are simply rolled too tightly. This can cause the tobacco to gather in places through out the cigar and it can act as something of a block to the flow of smoke and air. This is going to make the cigar hard to keep lit, and you will find that you have to work too hard to get the smoke through the cigar.

If you continue to have problems with the draw on the cigar, you are going to want to keep feeling for more areas of blockage. Repeat the process until you have a smooth draw from the cigar. You might find that the cigar goes out while you are doing this. Simply relight the cigar and keep going.

You might find several spots in the cigar that have this issue. Repeat the above procedure until you have a nice, free flow of smoke coming through. If the cigar goes out while you are doing this, simply relight it and continue working on the cigar. In time, you will have a cigar that is easy to smoke and one that you can enjoy. Don’t neglect hand rolled cigars because you heard they are hard to draw. Now you can fix the problem.
