Exposed: Crate Training Dogs

in Home & Family - Landscaping
by Craig Clemins

One of the most common ways to train dogs is called crate training. “Crates” are usually made from plastic or steel wire and come in different sizes. Crate training is considered to be one of the best forms of dog training.

Crate training is based around the fact that dogs don’t like to use there den’s as a toilet. As dogs spend a lot of time inside a crate during crate training, they learn to resist the urge to pee until they are out of the crate – this building up their ability to control when and where they pee.

During crate training, a puppy will spend almost all its time inside its crate. The puppy will only be allowed out of the crate during feeding time and when it is being supervised. Whenever the puppy is let out of its den (crate) it should be taken to the designated toilet area immediately.

When choosing a crate make sure its large enough so that your dog can move comfortably inside. A crate that is 1.5 times your dog’s length and has a few inches of head room when your dog’s in the standing position is about right. If the crate is too long the puppy may use the addition area to pee in. In the case that your crate is too big for you dog, block off one end of the crate to make it smaller. Plastic crates with wire doors are the easiest to clean and transport so we recommend getting one of these where possible.

When crate training your puppy; best results are achieved when toilet breaks are frequent and at consistent intervals. This will minimize the number of accidents. Little by little you can extend the time your puppy is inside the crate without a break as the puppy will slowly build up bladder control.

You should endeavour to set the crate up as a welcoming and nice place for your puppy to be. Putting your puppy’s toys inside the crate and lining the crate with a blanket will help with this. Feed the dog close to the crate, and give your puppy rewards for good behaviour inside the crate. Doing these small things will help build up your dog’s positive image of the crate.

Never use the crate as a prison or place of punishment ? this will seriously set you back in your crate training efforts. Try not to leave your dog in the crate for long periods of time as this may cause you dog to eventually fear the crate.

While crate training has been proven to be a highly effective way of house training puppies, it is not universally accepted. Some experts claim that puppies can become too attached to the crate after being locked inside it for such a long time.

5 Steps To Stop Your Puppy From Chewing

in Home & Family - Landscaping
by Craig Clemins

Puppies are little rascals at the best of times. They mess up the house, destroy your belonging and chew the furniture to shreds. This article will show you in 5 easy steps how you can stop your puppy from chewing.

The first thing you need to do is to get your dog checked out by a vet. Sometimes puppies and dogs chew due to underlying medical reason’s, we need to make sure that everything is ok with our dogs before proceeding with this training.

Chewing is natural, but you need to decide what is acceptable and what isn’t. Puppies chew as a form of learning (just like human babies) so it shouldn’t be banned totally. Apart from just protecting your house, you also need to teach dogs what they can’t chew because of dangers in chewing – such as electric cables etc.

The easiest way to teach your dog the items that can and can’t be chewed is by using the “No” command. Use it anytime your dog starts to chew on something that it shouldn’t. After telling your dog “No”, remove the item it was chewing. Should your dog resist giving you the item, squirt a little water in its face and then take the item.

Don’t rush up to get the object from your dog as it will think you are playing. Slowly walk to the dog and remove the object it’s chewing. For objects that can’t be moved, consider using a spray deterrent such as bitter apple spray.

The idea is not to destroy your dogs chewing aspirations. You should encourage it to chew on chew toys, bones and crunchy biscuits instead of your shoes.

Watch out for aggressive unexpected reaction when you try to remove your dogs favourite chew toy. Some dogs will resist the removal of one of “their” possessions.

Use the tips mentioned above to train your dog what can and can’t be chewed. In time and with a little persistence your dog will know exactly what she should and shouldn’t be chewing.

Obedience Training for Dogs Revealed

in Home & Family - Landscaping
by Craig Clemins

Obedience training is one of the most important things you will ever go through with your dog. Obedience training will not stop all of your dog’s behavior problems, but applied correctly, it can make a big impact on many of them. Obedience training allows for clear communication with your dog and is the best way to demonstrate exactly what is and isn’t acceptable behavior. It also enables you to correctly demand obedience from your dog.

Without the proper obedience training your dogs will exhibit behaviors such as improper elimination, destroying your home, loud and inappropriate barking, fighting, biting and many other destructive behaviors. All of which will gradually get worse if the dog feels you are not taking the role of the leader, if he establishes himself as the leader of the pack, even training becomes that much harder.

Obedience training will also set you up as the chief of the pack. This top dog status will make training a lot easier and your dog will thrive to please you.

One important tip to consider when starting obedience training with your dog is to make sure that it is fun. It should never be boring. Practicing entertaining training lessons will be much more fun for both you and your dog and it will also bring more success.

If you are unsure of exactly how to obedience train your dog, you may benefit from using the services of a professional dog trainer. Professional dog trainers train your dog in the correct way making things much easier for you. You will learn proper commands and your dog learns how to obey them.

Training should always be fun and to the point. Don’t draw out training as long training are actually detrimental to your dogs learning. Make the training as fun as possible, always include 1 or 2 of your dog favorite games. Stay consistent and firm throughout training.

Make sure that you offer rewards and treats when your dog accomplishes tasks correctly. This offers great encouragement for your dog and stimulates further improvement. Be careful to stay calm when praising your dog, if you get too carried away your dog will get excited and lose focus.

Affection and treats are a big part of successful obedience training. As a side note, always limit reprimanding your dog as this doesn’t really offer any positives to the training and will in most cases only make the training less effective.

Proper obedience training for your dog will bring you a happy and well trained dog. Take your time, be patient and reward his positive behaviors and your dog will be happy to try and please you.

How to Make Your Dog Stop Chasing?

in Home & Family - Landscaping
by Craig Clemins

Some dogs think it’s their job to chase anything that moves. Cars, bikes, children, balls and other animals are all at risk of being chased dogs. Chasing dogs can be a real problem however, not only are they annoying at times, but they also put themselves and other people at risk of injury. If a dog runs out onto an open road to chase a car, it’s in serious danger of being hit and in the worst case scenario even being killed. Behavior like this also puts the drivers of the cars and anyone around the area at risk also.

You can avoid the horrible situation of losing your dog by working through some techniques to curb your dogs behavior. It’s vital that you work on training your dog as the alternative may mean you lose your dog for good, a terrible situation to think about.

To start training your dog not to chase, buy a leash. Walk with your dog on the leash and try to keep your dog calm. Avoid are yelling at your dog when it takes off, this is dangerous for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it may result in your dog chasing even harder and putting itself in more danger, or your dog abruptly stopping in the middle of the street, another undesirable outcome. Using a leash is the best way to start training your dog not to chase.

The next step in training is to make your dog heel on command. When your dog heels on command before crossing a street, give a little praise but no more than this. Excessive praise will make your dog excited and less responsive to your commands. For the extra piece-of-mind consider using a long leash even once your dog has proven that it can obey your instructions.

To actually teach the dog how to heal, you will need to walk them around, stopping occasionally and saying heel, then returning to the walk. When he does what you expect of him, give him a treat and some very gentle words and affection. He will learn that healing is a good thing. If your dog is really hyperactive, this training may not actually work for you, for this situation you may need to take your dog to the veterinarian or to your dog trainer, or use a professional dog training guide to keep him from chasing cars.

Once you have successfully taught your dog how to heel, you will be able to relax when your dog is outside, you can even walk your dog without a leash if you’re totally confident in him. Just remember to avoid over praising your dog as this will bring about bad behaviors again. Keep calm and give a little praise for good behavior, not a lot.

Secrets to Successfully Housebreaking Your Puppy

in Home & Family - Landscaping
by Craig Clemins

Successfully housebreaking a puppy is perhaps on of the biggest challenges any dog owner faces. In order to successfully housebreak a puppy, dog owners need to be consistent and patient. A lot of the time new dog owners won’t have the patience required to train the puppy effectively and it will end up passing most of its time in the crate.

Dogs that have been well cared for by owners who have shown patience, love, and attention are usually well trained. You’ll find you get best results when training your puppy under these circumstances.

If you find that your dog has had an accident, one of the worst things to do is yell at him. On the other hand, you can’t just do nothing as this will result in your dog believe he is the Alpha dog. One useful thing to remember here is that dogs always avoid going to the toilet near where they sleep and eat. You can use this to your advantage when puppy training your dog by keeping it inside its crate when you are not there.

Many dogs training professionals swear by crate training when housebreaking puppies. In time, dogs often learn to love their crates. The crate will start to become a place where your dog feels happy and relaxed.

Dogs need to go to the toilet at least a couple of times per day. In most cases they will need to go to the toilet immediately after waking up, and after meals. Get your dog into the habit of going outside after eating and after waking up. If you forget to take your dog outside, you may find he urinates inside the house.

If you live in a small apartment that doesn’t have space outside for your dog to go to the toilet, you may find paper training a good alternative to crate training. Paper training involves teaching your puppy to go to the toilet on paper which is placed in an allocated “toilet” area. Using this method, each day you’ll need to put new paper down.

Once your dog is trained, he will let you know that he needs to go outside to pee. Dogs usually do this by circling, barking at the door, or scratching the door. When this happens you can let your dog out and then congratulate him by rewarding him with a treat.

How to End Dog Aggression

in Home & Family - Landscaping
by Craig Clemins

Aggressive dogs pose a frightening and at times dangerous dilemma. Luckily, if you dog undergoes aggressive dog training, many of the problems can quickly go away.

Millions of people have experienced instances of dog bites and in most of these reports those people are children.

Aggression in dogs can be brought about in a number of ways. Sometimes the environment that they live in plays a big part, while other times they inherit aggressive behavior. Some breeds are more likely to be aggressive than others, Akita’s and Bulldogs are fine examples of this. As dogs traditionally live in packs, they are also built to fight for the top position and sometimes do this using aggression.

The first step in resolving dog aggression is to fully understand the problem and what’s causing it. You will then be able to teach your dog not to succumb to these aggressive tendencies. You should also make sure your dog respects you, the best way to gain respect is by cementing your place as the Alpha Dog. Your dog will then be much more likely to follow your leadership and give you less problems.

The cause of your dog’s aggression may be fear, or protecting their territory. Dogs are often aggressive amongst themselves, especially when two dogs of the same sex meet. Whatever the cause or reason for your dogs aggression, you will need to start re-training your dog as soon as possible.

As soon as your puppy is 3 months of age you should get it used to socializing with other dogs. Some trainers suggest that your puppy needs to be 1 year old, however 3 months has always been fine in my experience. If you have an adult dog, it will most likely require more just socialization to fix the problem.

Regardless of how stubborn your dog may seem, with consistency and persistence you can train it to be less aggressive. Make sure you are seen as the Alpha Dog and have the respect of your dog – this will make the training that much easier. Positive reinforcement and praise goes a long way, use it when your dog behaves the way you want him to and he will learn over time how he should be behaving.

Lastly, aggressive dogs can be dangerous, so you will need to take the time to train slowly and without fear. If however you notice that the aggressive behaviors are not getting better then you should take your dog to the veterinarian or to a qualified dog trainer.

Crate Training Dogs Tips and Tricks Exposed

in Home & Family - Landscaping
by Craig Clemins

Behavior problems can sometimes cause dog owners to mistreat their dogs, and even abandon them altogether. Crate training has helped change this. Crate training now lets you train your dog in a safe and secure place and has proven to be a very successful way to house train dogs.

Crates have three main purposes. The first is to provide a secure and safe place for your dog during house training, crates also protect household items, and they are also essential for travel.

Some veterinarians have mixed views about the use of crate training to train dogs. Some vets believe that crates force unfair confinement to dogs and that crates may even be dangerous and damaging to dogs. Other professional dog trainers swear by the use of crates however.

Veterinarians question whether or not a dog is being inhumanely treated when it is enclosed in a crate. The fact is that crates have numerous benefits that lead to you having a better bond with your dog. Furthermore, when dogs are trained properly they have a sense of safety and security when they are inside their crates.

Some other benefits of having a crate include being able to leave your dog at home without being concerned about your furniture being destroyed, your carpet being used as a restroom, and also you know that your dog feels safe when you are not there. Crates also encourage your dog not to pee on the floor (they don’t like peeing where they sleep) and aid in potty training. Furthermore, they help a lot when traveling in the car.

Some of the things you should remember about the crates are that it was not meant to keep your dog all day. In some instances such as long distance travel, where the dog may be crated for long periods of time, you will need to ensure that the dog is exercised during the day so that they have a chance to release pent up energies and they don’t feel confined.

While crating is an excellent way for training most dogs it is not for every single dog. All dogs are different and what works well for some is clearly not an option for others especially older dogs.

The best time for a dog to actually be trained to the crate would be as puppies. And if it seems that no amount of firmness or conditioning will help you to train your dog, then it is better to discontinue the use of this product as continuing in this manner will be worse for your dog.
