Be Your Own Handyman With Garage Oil Mats

in Home & Family - Landscaping
by Angie Meza

There are certain jobs that we have to do around the house that we would rather not get involved with. We’re almost certain before we start that we are going to “create a mess” and are not really sure how we should clean up afterward. Jobs like this tend to be pushed to the back, as we favor doing something much less taxing instead! Maybe changing the oil in the car is one of these tasks?

Whether you are a handyman or not, you might feel that you have to perform smaller tasks on your vehicles yourself these days to save money wherever you can. You know that you need to change the oil on your car, but want to avoid the costly fees that you have to pay whenever you take it into the shop. If you prepare yourself correctly in advance, this need not be the real chore that you fear it is.

One of the first things you should buy to help you when you are getting ready to change the oil in your car is a garage oil mat. These simple products can save a great deal of cleanup time, as they will catch some of that spill which would inevitably occur as you are draining or filling. You know what happens when you unscrew the oil filter? The oil mat, once in place, will help.

A good quality garage oil mat will retain all the spillage and not allow it to seep through to the floor beneath. Let’s face it, if it does this, there is no point! Best products will absorb as much oil as you can imagine, which is good if you’re clumsy enough to spill the entire carton!

Whenever you have car or truck, from time to time fluid will leak and will start to stain your concrete floor. Are you a detective? A little bit off work here will locate the source and when you find it, a garage oil mat should be placed immediately beneath. You do not want to have to deal with expensive damage to your concrete.

A garage oil mat can be used for many different purposes. If you are a handyman and often working with mechanical objects outside, you may choose to place a garage oil mat at the threshold to your house. Then, you will be able to wipe your shoes or boots on the mat before you enter and any residue beneath would be absorbed before it is trailed into the home.

When the season comes around and it is time to start thinking about mowing your lawn, you need to remember where you stored it. You don’t want to be in for a nasty shock when you retrieve the mower, only to find that oil has leaked from beneath it and cause a real mess. Here is a place that you can put a garage oil mat and not have to deal with those concrete stains that can be very difficult to remove.

Did you know that the value of your home can be reduced by a damaged garage floor? Over time, drips and spills will take their toll and few people want to go to the expense of sealing the floor with a repellent material. It is far easier and more cost effective to place a garage oil mat where ever there appears to be a problem.

Lower Your Energy Bills With a Draft Guard

in Home & Family - Landscaping
by Angie Meza

Energy is a hot topic these days, with the poor homeowner constantly up against a flood of bad news and an ever-increasing list of bills. Oil prices are never stable, are they and we never know where they are going to head next. The economy has really done damage to our delicate monthly budgets. The underlying trend for energy costs is higher and it is becoming more and more difficult to heat or cool the home through the various seasons. It would certainly add insult to injury if cool air was to seek out or frigid air come in and we should look for leaks around all apertures, treating them with a draft guard.

Older houses tend to settle and when this happens movements can cause miniature gaps between the bottoms of the doors and the floor. It’s difficult to see these gaps with the human eye but that doesn’t mean they’re not there. Air will seep in or out constantly and have a huge effect on your utility bill cost. Using a good draft guard in all of these difficult areas could kill the issue right away.

Draft guards are also known as draft blockers and have been proven effective over the years. Conventional doorways measure 3 feet in width and the draft guards, at 42 inches are perfect for this problem. Due to their flexibility, they can be manipulated for any area.

Front and back doors are the first places that you think about, but traditional homes have many other horrors awaiting. Warm air can rise during the winter and get out through the attic door, so a draft guard would be good here as well.

Looking for leaks should be a concerted effort and not confined to doors, as sliders to your pool or patio area can send you air out there too. Who wants to be cooling the outside air? Also, think of your utilities, which will not last as long as they would by working far too often.

Go to all your windows and run your hand around the edges to feel for drafts. It’s surprising, isn’t it? Draft guards can work well here as well.

Invest in draft guard products for the long-term as they are designed to last. They are made from polypropylene and filled with a great insulator, ground corn cob and they can be simply air dried if they ever get wet.

Everything helps when you’re trying to save on your monthly utility bill and you should do a comprehensive review of your home to help out. As you can generally get a bulk discount for these items, stock up on a quantity of draft guards to help you.

How Can You Avoid Water Moisture From Invading Your Home?

in Home & Family - Landscaping
by Angie Meza

Flooding can be a homeowner’s worst nightmare and statistics show that it can happen anywhere. Those who live on the banks of one of our mighty rivers or lakes may always have this thought at the back of their mind, but those who live many miles away from a body of water can always be subject to flooding, should weather conditions dictate. Mother nature is able to surprise us often and we must be as prepared as we can.

Freak or flash flooding is a danger that few of us can adequately prepare for. If the rains are sufficiently heavy and prolonged and your house is in the wrong place at the wrong time, nothing you can do will prevent the water from coming up through the drains or in through your doors and windows. However, the vast majority of threats are caused by much less spectacular events and can certainly be prepared for in advance.

Wherever you look around the country, different major weather events can occur. For example, wintry nor’easter’s threaten the Atlantic seaboard, tropical cyclones threaten Florida or monsoon rains threaten Arizona. In any of these situations, really persistent rains with strong winds can build up water moisture around windows and doors and threaten entry. If you’re not prepared your valuables can be damaged, so you should look at all defense possibilities.

Polypropylene socks, known in certain circles as “hurricane” Socks are good defenses against water moisture. They are purpose built and highly durable and can be stored in your garage until such time as you need them. They are often found in Florida and the Gulf states, but can be used nationwide.

If you think that persistent storms are a nuisance and that you are having to work overtime as you try and defend your home, just think what would happen if you did not have any of these hurricane socks available to help you deter water moisture. If significant damage was caused to your valuables and carpets, for example, insurance companies might not cover this as they generally have riders absolving them of water damage liability.

Water moisture absorbing socks can also be used around appliances that store or filter water, including water storage tanks. These socks can be the first line of defense here as well and give you warning of leakage, enabling you to repair in time.

Hurricane socks will eventually become saturated with water moisture, but you can simply wring them out over a drain or even put them in a spin cycle within your washer. They do not take too kindly to being dried in a machine, but once they are spun they can be put back in place and will go to work for you yet again.

Preparation is everything, because let’s face it, you don’t know when mother nature is going to rear her ugly head and present you with a significant problem of defense.

Draft Stoppers Help You With Your Carbon Footprint

in Home & Family - Landscaping
by Angie Meza

You must have had your head in the sand if you do not know anything about global warming and climate change right now. Everywhere we turn, on the television and on the Internet we are being told about the damage caused by temperature change and how those melting ice caps could cause flooding and other severe weather. All these problems may seem so far away, but you have to understand that we need to take action ourselves or nothing will be done. Wasting energy around our own home merely increases the emission of carbon that we are responsible for.

Carbon emissions are a direct result of energy used and in our homes, HVAC systems account for the biggest slice. Don’t you hate seeing that utility bill at the end of the month? It just seems to be growing and growing and part of the reason is a lot of leaking air around your home. Consider fitting draft stoppers as soon as you can.

Wherever you have an opening, where a window or door might be sitting, you may well have leaks. Draft stoppers have been designed to fit in these locations and their efficiency is matched by their cost effectiveness. Absorb all leaks as they occur, your bill can be reduced substantially.

You may not think that you have a problem and that your house is leak proof. Nothing is further from the truth as whether you have a new home or an old one, leaks are likely. Why risk wasting all that expensive year, whether it be in winter or summer, it’s still expensive.

Leaking air can be controlled very well by draft stoppers, which are purpose designed for the problem. Check yourself and you will probably find leaks were you did not suspect. Look around all your windows and doors and don’t do half a job!

Our own carbon footprint may be relatively small by global standards, but if we all choose to look the other way then nothing will be done. Our children and other descendents would not thank us for being inactive and we can make a difference to the amount of money in our pocket right now, as well.

When you fit draft stoppers you will not have to worry about them from month to month as they are very durable. They are purpose made from polypropylene and have ground corn cob within, one of our best insulators. Purchase one of these products for all of your leaks.

If you don’t take action to cut down on your expensive utility bills, where are you going to start? We have all learned what excesses can do for us and we’re not likely to forget the great recession anytime soon. Each one of us must be more fiscally responsible as we enter the new year.

Here Comes the Wintry Weather — Snow Mats Protect Your Garage

in Home & Family - Landscaping
by Angie Meza

As the winter season approaches it is time to think about more than the holidays, but to pay attention to how you are going to get through this difficult season with safety and convenience in mind. In our northern climes, with the changing season comes the threat of wintry weather and everyone has to prepare the home and surroundings accordingly. It’s time to think about snow mats for the garage, as well.

Driving around in the summer can be difficult when we encounter those storms, with wet and dirty roads a problem. However, wintry precipitation is a whole lot worse. Remember that before the storms get their the authorities have to salt the roads and then when they clean up it can create a slushy concoction which gets onto your car and would be deposited in your garage.

snow mats are a great answer to the mess that can fall and slither off your car or truck when you get back from a wintry trip to drop the kids off at school. Nobody wants to stand outside in the frozen weather and try and clean the mess off the vehicle before you enter the garage. You also do not want to deal with an awful mess on the floor afterward.

If you place snow mats in your garage at the start of the season, whenever you arrive back from a trip in those inclement conditions the mats will be ready to absorb all that muck, slush and snow when it falls off. They can absorb gallons of liquid at any time and will simply air dry.

Are you really prepared for the winter season? You may have to get that snow blower you’ve been promising yourself and you should also check to see if your winter clothes and heavy boots are in good condition. While you’re thinking of all of this, invest some time in the condition of your garage by buying snow mats to place beneath each vehicle.

As snow mats are made from a very durable polypropylene material, they can also absorb a good amount of liquid. If you have several vehicles you can buy mats appropriately and you can even cut them to size if need be. They’re also designed to be nonslip as they have a vinyl base.

If your area is prone to a lot of snow you’re going to have to do some preparation before you think about turning to Christmas gifts and decorations. The wintry landscape can be beautiful to look at through the window but the mess afterward is not too pleasant to deal with!

Snow mats can be used throughout the year and left in place as they can be equally as valuable during those rainy summer storms. The contents that you have stored in your garage can be kept safe and dry year round.

Defend Your Property With a Moisture Absorbent

in Home & Family - Landscaping
by Angie Meza

We rely so much on water in our daily lives, for all our household chores as well as just to survive. It can be ironic that water is one of our biggest enemies as well, as it is said that within natural disasters, drowning represents the number one cause of death. Typical home insurance policies do not cover the consequence of water damage and this shows us how problematic and temperamental this can be. For a first line of defense, moisture absorbent products should be carried in the home.

Flash flooding can be suffered at any time and in any place where it rains, even if you think you are not prone. Storm surge and rains can quickly overrun a drainage system and the water may approach your property before you know it.

In tropical climates they are used to aggressive storms and homeowners often used hurricane socks as moisture absorbent defenses. These items can be used to deter wind driven rain and minor flooding problems and keep properties secure. Windows, doors, sliders and garage doors especially are vulnerable and should be treated.

Look for the best moisture absorbent hurricane socks you can find. They should be designed to absorb gallons of water at any one time and be known for their durability. Just think of the amount of cleanup time you could save.

When checking hurricane sock moisture absorbent products, look to see if they are made of tubular nylon, the best products available. Within the sock, super absorbent polypropylene will certainly do the job for you and as the sock is designed to be very flexible, it will conform to any particular location.

Sometimes water threats don’t come from outside, but from within. Consider placing a moisture absorbent sock around your water tank, especially if it is placed in an upstairs room or an attic. These socks may not save you from total failure, but may well give you adequate warning that leakage is starting to occur.

Do not wait until the stormy season is upon you and certainly stock up on moisture absorbent socks in advance. Use the Boy Scouts’ motto and always be prepared.

We sometimes see systems moving in off the ocean, tropical cyclones, or nor’easter’s dumping a lot of rain in one area over a matter of days. If you find that you are impacted in this way, take the moisture absorbent products and place them in your washing machine spin cycle. This will get rid of a great deal of the water content very quickly and you can replace them to keep doing sterling work for you.

Catch All Mats Live Up To Their Name

in Home & Family - Landscaping
by Angie Meza

Sometimes we dread a trip to the store in the winter months as we know that we will have to deal with not only the crazy traffic, but also slippery and messy roads. When we’re driving back all we can think of is getting to the haven of our garage and back into our warm home. When we see the automatic door opening we know that all we have to do is to get out of the car in relative comfort and retrieve the groceries, but all that residue from the outside world is dripping to the floor and will ultimately cause problems.

It is true to say that the garage is not our tidiest room. Anything that doesn’t fit elsewhere is stored in there and we don’t keep it up as often as we should. The surface comes up against an onslaught as well when we drive the car back in from the dirty outside world. Anything that is stored around the edges can also be affected and catch all mats should be placed before any damage gets out of hand.

When you bring in all the rain, slush and road salt from the outside world, it can cause damage to the cabinets and other items stored around your garage. This room is already a breeding ground for mold and mildew as it is very humid and has no real ventilation. You need to consider catching all this residue with catch all mats, specifically designed for the purpose.

As absorbent mats are made from durable polypropylene, once you fit them beneath all the vehicles in your garage they will last a long time. Don’t worry about any slip and fall accidents either, as the base of the mat is made from vinyl.

Spring cleaning time will come around before you know it and you will be really thankful that you had the foresight to put catch all mats beneath all the vehicles. The moisture that dripped off will have evaporated and all you will need to do is to vacuum the mats to brush up all the remaining dirt.

Garages come in all shapes and sizes and the room available to pack your cars varies according to how much of the storage is scattered around the edges of the room. Absorbent mats can be cut to any particular size quite easily and with a little bit of forethought make your character look very orderly.

Don’t worry if you have large vehicles to account for in your garage, as with a little bit of planning you can combine absorbent mats and place them so that they cover the entire floor area.

Remember that when it comes time to sell your home, the garage is a very important part of your overall assets. Make sure that you protect it as much as possible so that you can get top dollar when you sell.

Begin Your Storm Preparation Now

in Home & Family - Landscaping
by Angie Meza

It is a fact of life that all of us are prone to the effect of a natural disaster, regardless of the area that we live in. As such, whether you rent or own your home, you need to work on a plan that will help you meet every eventuality. While it is true to say that this will not help you if you are subjected to the full force of the disaster, the vast majority of us will get through just fine so long as we conduct adequate storm preparation in advance.

If you hear from newscasters that you may be subjected to the effects of a tropical storm or worse, one of the first thing you should do is to step outside and look all around your house. If you see any loose tiles, broken fences, parts of your patio deck that are not secured, then you need to take action to either fix or secure them. In the event of a very strong storm these could become dangerous projectiles which could damage either your property or somebody else’s.

Storm preparation may begin outside but should also be conducted inside as well. In the worst-case scenario part of your roof, doors or windows could be breached. Therefore, move glass items or large mirrors and store them safely beneath a bed, for example. Heavy objects should be placed on the floor.

Sometimes you feel safe sitting out a tropical cyclone at home. In this case, you will need to make a long list of supplies and attach it to a storm preparation drill. Each person in the household needs a three-day supply of both water and basic dry food, something that can be prepared with little or no effort. While you are at it, don’t forget the pets as well.

To make sure that you keep in contact with the outside world, a battery-powered radio and an adequate supply of extra batteries are very important. There’s nothing like being stranded with no news as the hours tick by, especially if the passing storm has been a bad one.

There will be a lot to do after the storm passes and you should remember this when you are conducting storm preparation. If you are unlucky enough to sustain damage, you will need some kind of proof to show to the insurance adjuster. Get out your camera and take as many pictures as you can and once again after the damage has been done.

While not all tropical cyclones are very damaging wind events, they are almost always bad rain events. Wind driven rain can be pushed into your house around windows or doors and there is little that you can do to stop it. However, you can place hurricane socks in and around all these areas as these are especially made to absorb gallons of water at any time. This will undoubtedly help you to save damage to carpets and other valuables.

The storm preparation list should be kept up-to-date and handy at all times. Sometimes the disaster can strike without warning and whoever is prepared has the best chance of making it through. Check on an adequate supply of first aid products and solutions for all your family and pets alike.

Don’t Let Your Driveway Floor Become an Eyesore

in Home & Family - Landscaping
by Angie Meza

One of the very first things that a visitor to your home will see when he or she arrives, is the approach way. This can leave a good impression or a bad one. The driveway floor will say a lot about you as it represents a significant part of the real estate they perceive from the sidewalk. As such, you should make sure that it is in pristine condition as possible and if it is heavily stained you might want to consider resurfacing.

Over the course of a number of years, misuse can cause your driveway floor to take on a rather ragged look. Sometimes a vehicle will be parked outside on a very regular basis and oil stains will take their toll. If the previous owner had performed maintenance on his vehicle you will probably see the results. It is too much to hope that all previous owners of the home had been as careful as you.

You may be lucky to have purchased a home from a caring previous owner or to be in possession of a brand-new property. If your driveway floor is in excellent condition you should make sure that it stays that way. If you do happen to park cars outside for any period of time, make sure that an absorbent pad is placed beneath. These pads will absorb any oil stains which will result from such activity and note that if you have an older vehicle, this is far more likely to be the case.

If you want to avoid having to put long tedious hours into cleaning up a stained driveway floor surface, one of the first things that you can do is to get into your garage and clean out all that junk. In this way, not only will you have a much more ordered place, but you will be able to pull your vehicles in, out of view and create a much more pleasing external look.

If your driveway floor is very badly damaged, you will likely have to consider concrete stain work. This is a very significant job, as the acid stain will only works correctly if the surface is prepared accordingly. In addition, you need to be very careful that you do not get the stain on any other surfaces as it will not come out.

Acid staining takes a lot of preparation and the first thing that you need to do is to undergo a thorough cleaning. Once this has been allowed to dry, find any cracks or blemishes and make sure that you fix them using concrete products. It is all in the preparation if you want to have a perfect finished result and if you don’t fix the blemishes, they will be highlighted once you stain them.

All dirt and grease will need to be removed from your driveway floor before you attempt a concrete stain. This will invariably mean the use of harsh chemicals, which could then cause blemishes to the overall surface. However, the concrete stain will take care of this residual effect.

Concrete stain needs to be applied to your driveway floor when you know that the weather is going to allow you to work unhindered. Do not choose an overly hot and sunny day and make sure that you check the weather forecast first to see that you will have no rain for the entire period, or the drying time required afterwards.

Invest in Garage Sealing

in Home & Family - Landscaping
by Angie Meza

Admit it, you don’t treat the garage as nicely as you do any other room in your house. If you have something that you have little use for, you normally open the garage door and throw it in there. Other visits normally involve running between the car and the fridge to transfer groceries and when it comes to the summer months it is just too hot to be inside there anyway.

The garage gets very little of our attention, although we should make sure we look after it as best we can, because it is part of our valuable assets. Don’t let it get into a state of disrepair, as it will take a considerable effort to clean up. To ensure that the floor remains in pristine condition, you should consider garage sealing as an investment.

Know in advance that garage sealing is a major undertaking and is not for the faint of heart. Everything will need to be removed from this room and you will need to be sure that the weather is on your side as, invariably, a lot of stuff will be piled in your driveway.

Even though garage sealing will do a lot for those annoying problems of concrete dust, spills, oil stains, road salt and general street residue, you must be prepared for a major task. While your home’s value will be increased, there are other ways which are less costly and take less effort.

The backbreaking work part of garage sealing begins with removing nasty stains on the floor using a combination of degreasers, chemical cleaners and high-pressure hoses. You may have to go over these areas several times to be satisfied.

As you prepare your room, allow at least one day before you actually start garage sealing. This will enable you to ensure that you get rid of all those stubborn stains and allow the area to dry adequately before starting.

Note that during garage sealing, the product will stain any surface that comes up against. Use a paint roller and protect the walls with paper and tape. Work from the back of the room to the front and make sure that the edges are clean, especially when it comes to the threshold with the driveway.

As the job of garage sealing can be a significant undertaking and can be especially difficult if you are somewhat frail, make sure that the stains do not reach your floor in the first place by putting in place absorbent pads. These are specially designed to fit beneath your vehicles and will absorb any fluids, including the worst engine or transmission oil leaks. Definitely an investment.
